Donald Szumigala started his career in Emergency Services in 1999. He joined the Doyle Volunteer Hose Co No 1 in Cheektowaga, NY and became a Firefighter/EMT. Additionally he worked for Rural Metro Medical Services. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Law Enforcement community as a private Security Guard working at the Buffalo Zoo.
In 2003, Don was hired by the Erie County Office of Sheriff and worked as a Correction Officer. He worked in the Jail Management Division and was appointed to the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden, NY. In 2005, he left the ECSO to join the Town of Cheektowaga Police Department, a 1st ring suburb of Buffalo, NY. This department of 129 sworn personnel is the 2nd busiest department in Erie County after the City of Buffalo. In 2008, following 3 years in the Patrol Division, Don found his place in policing with appointment to the Erie Crime Analysis Center, housed at the Buffalo Police Department. He is a New York State Certified Crime Analyst and specializes in Organized Retail Crime / Shoplifting.
In November 2008 he instituted Project LLEPORDS, a Regional Anti-Shoplifting Public/Private Partnership. This group continues to operate today with relationships between Police Departments and Retail Establishments from across Western and Central New York State. Since inception of this program, he has assisted other jurisdictions in creation of Public/Private Partnerships and maintains consistent oversight of the Project LLEPORDS program.
Don remains a Volunteer Firefighter with the Doyle Hose Company #1 in Cheektowaga, New York. He currently holds the position of Fire Chief. Over the past 18 years he has held the positions of Captain and Assistant Chief, along with remaining a certified New York State Emergency Medical Technician. As part of the Fire Department, he is a Nationally Certified Firefighter 2 and Nationally Certified Fire Instructor 2, amongst having many other State and National Certifications. He is an American Heart CPR Instructor, and also holds the position of President with the Town of Cheektowaga Fire Chiefs Mutual Aid Organization; a civic group composed of all of the Town Fire Chiefs in Cheektowaga.
In 2014, following some guest lecturing, he joined the staff at the State University of New York at Buffalo as an Adjunct Instructor, where he continues to teach in the Recreation Division. He had prior lectured as a guest speaker in the Business Division, participating in presentations on “Modern Policing” as part of the Computer Forensics course.
Don is also the President / CEO of Modern Technology Services of New York Inc, a corporation that he founded in 2015. This company based in Buffalo, New York, works toward assisting Public and Private entities that do not have IT staff or need assistance in specialty projects. Their key offerings include modernizing business infrastructure, surveillance systems, security consulting and private database/software creation.
Don graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a BS in Business Administration and a concentration in Human Resources. He received his Correction Officer Certificate through Erie Community College and graduated from the 44th Police Academy at Niagara Community College.
